Should There Be More Required Exercise for Students at School?
"I think Students should exercise and keep healthy, but they also need to have balance in their lives. Those who have balance are successful, and I think we are overloading kids with too much today. I am more concerned with the pressure that kids are feeling to 'do it all'." Oct. 1, 2014 Patty Finer
"As an advocate for whole child, child-centered, 21st century education, I believe that the physical body of students needs to be included in their education along with their brain. Let's be really clear, allowing children to be physically engaged as they learn is a crucial structure that teachers should often use in their teaching. 'Exercise' is far more than running laps, it also includes the ability of children to utilize their tactile and kinesthetic capabilities, even in core academic subjects. Of course, this extends too to the athletic fields, the auditorium or cafetorium, and the playground. There are tons of research that shows the huge positive benefits of exercise on brain health as well as tons of research that shows the deleterious impact of unbridled focus on narrow 'academic' pursuits. Including the whole child, body and brain, in teaching is essential." Oct. 1, 2014 Craig Foster
"The SMMUSD complies with state requirements for student exercise. However, our district should do whatever it can to encourage, promote and create greater avenues for increased student exercise. We should find means to instill in our students the value of exercise as children and throughout their lives. We should also find ways to make exercise fun and enjoyable.
In an era in which child obesity and Type 2 diabetes have reached unacceptable levels, education about exercise and health as well as opportunities and encouragement of exercise are more important than ever. Our district should partner with the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu, and non-profit and other entities that provide athletic and exercise programs to ensure that we enhance the available opportunities for young people in our cities.
I support working with the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu to improve SMMUSD and city recreational facilities and programming available for students and other residents. In partnership, we should replace and improve decrepit athletic facilities at Samohi, install a rubberized track and turf the Lincoln Middle School field, and make other facilities improvements. Joint programs that encourage walking and biking to school offer complementary means of increasing exercise among students." Oct. 2001 Laurie Lieberman
"Perhaps there should not be more required exercise but more exercise should definitely be encouraged and possibly woven into classroom activities in elementary school classrooms. For example, to give the kids a break from sitting, the teacher (or a designated student) could lead children in stretching, breathing and other exercises for about 5 minutes.
Furthermore, students should be required to fully participate during Physical Education classes, rather than standing around on the sidelines as is sometimes the case. Also, physical education teachers should plan for an appropriate amount of physical activity (in the way of games, jogging, work-outs and/or other exercise) for their classes.
It should also be noted that by providing the real facts about nutrition, providing whole food vegan options, encouraging exercise, and encouraging teachers to model a healthy lifestyle, our school district can help students be truly physically fit--without requiring more exercise." "Our educational program focuses on the whole child, emphasizing physical and social-emotional health. Students learn what constitutes a healthy person and how both good diet and exercise are necessary.
The district provides opportunities at all levels for students to be physically active through structured activities and during recess and after lunch.
Elementary children are taught how to exercise and play games, learning to have fun and to work cooperatively on teams. At the secondary level students need to meet certain goals such as completing a mile walk/run in certain time frames.
After school programs run by the district and the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu provide additional opportunity for physical activities. Both Santa Monica High School and Malibu High School have extensive CIF athletic programs fully supported by the district and parent groups.
The district's Food & Nutrition Services provides balanced and nutritious meals as part of the National Schools Breakfast and Lunch program and the award winning Farmers’ Market Salad Bar Program.
We need to continue to focus on the components of a healthy individual so that students learn to make good choices in their diet and activity selections both in school and at home." Oct. 1, 2014 Ralph Mechur
"Physical fitness and good nutrition are keys to creating healthy bodies and healthy minds – minds that are ready to learn. As we are a center for education, raising the profile of physical education and nutrition should begin in Pre-K and continue through the senior year of high school."
