Does the District Adequately Support High School Sports Teams?
"I support the teams where I can, I have not heard a lot of complaints, nor do I have information to rely on to determine yeah or nay." Oct. 1, 2014 Patty Finer
"As above, physical activity is essential to a whole child's health. Sports is an important offering we provide. It gives children outlets for their passions and gifts, an opportunity to play, a sense of being part of something larger than themselves, and as well as skill building and exercise. It is also an important cornerstone of high school life, both within the school and within the parent community, and even within the city. To the extent that all this is true, it follows that we should also provide a pathway from middle school sports to high school sports. This is a pathway that we do not currently provide. It is also a opportunity to increase city/school collaboration as we work together to provide healthy organized athletics programs to all our students. It must also be remembered that children find equivalent expression in many different ways and just as we support athletics, we need to support the arts, and extracurricular academics." Oct. 1, 2014 Craig Foster
"The District supports high school sports teams to the best of its ability, given the overall inadequacy of state funding for public schools. Compared to a number of nearby districts that have been forced to cut numerous high school sports teams, our district has continued to support an extraordinary number of teams. In fact, our district actually added a new sport and teams -- high school lacrosse -- in the past year. Since overall school funding is inadequate and all districts remain well below the funding levels they had achieved in the past, sports are one of the areas in which it has become necessary to rely, in large part, on private fundraising. We have been fortunate in that so many parents understand the District's predicament: the Shark Fund, the Samohi Booster Club, individual sports teams, the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation and others have stepped up both in Malibu and Santa Monica to support high school sports programs." Oct. 1, 2014 Laurie Lieberman
"There is a variety of sports available to eligible students at Santa Monica High School Some of the these sports are Cross Country, Track, Football, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo, Swimming, Basketball, Soccer, Wrestling and Baseball. Furthermore, a variety of sports are also available to students at Malibu High School. Therefore, there certainly is some support from the Santa Monica -Malibu Unified School District for high school sports teams.
However, recently coaches who were apparently doing a very good job, were fired without any good reasons to my knowledge. This suggests a lack of really adequate support for high school sports teams by district officials." Oct. 1, 2014 Dhun May
"The district provides basic funds for coaches, equipment and transportation to regularly scheduled events. Significant additional support comes from parent groups and student efforts to purchase uniforms, additional equipment, and for costs to attend additional competitions. This is true for our arts programs as well, where extensive fundraising supplements our classroom programs. It is important to note the collaborative efforts of our community to ensure that all students who are eligible to participate can, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Because of the change in education funding in California after the passage of Proposition 13, California funds education per student 47th in the US. This limits the ability of the district to fully fund activities outside the classroom. Until such time as additional funds are available we will have to rely on our communities to provide significant support for our extracurricular programs." Oct. 1, 2014 Ralph Mechur
"This is an area where I will need to investigate further the interests and concerns of students, parents, and coaches.
However, it is important to note that I am a big supporter of organized high school sports and also middle-school and elementary school intramural sports programs. We must provide our kids multiple pathways to academic success and we know that team sports in tandem with rigorous academics strengthen and improve student success."
